At the invitation of the Psychological Services Group, the Music Director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Ms Yip Wing-sie, spoke of the wisdom of life before an audience of over 300 Force members at a "Balances and Wisdom" seminar held at Police Headquarters on November 27.

Prior to Ms Yip's talk, the Hong Kong Police Choir lifted the curtain by giving a performance.  Ms Yip said she appreciated that Force members had other life engagement outside their jobs. Likewise, she often encouraged her musicians to remain more open minded and get in touch with people beyond their musical world to explore their potentials and broaden their horizons.

Speaking of her wisdom of managing an orchestra, Ms Yip described an orchestra as a "miniature society" with persons with different personalities. It was not an easy job to get musicians of different views to work together for the good of their performance. "Success does not mean everyone takes you as a conductor. It's a matter of knowing how to accommodate different views for the good of performance," Ms Yip said.

Ms Yip went on to say that through conducting, she learned that while it was important to accept others' constructive opinions, it was also important to remain "loyal to your own views and hard work". She told the audience: "I'm beginning to understand one can never be liked by everyone. You have to accept you may have flaws some times, but after you've made an effort, you should have confidence to express your views. If you do so, people will still respect you even if they don't agree with your views."

Ms Yip concluded her talk by reminding the audience "to balance our motivations and attitude in learning music or doing anything. You ought to have a passion and have to enjoy anything you do before you can succeed."

Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Ng Tsui Fung-ying thanks Ms Yip for sharing her wisdom of life
