The radio coverage from Fan Lau Kok to Peaked Hill in Marine West Division has been improved significantly. On November 2 last year, Assistant Commissioner (Information Systems) Peter Else and Chief Telecommunications Engineer Jolly Wong, together with Marine Port District Commander Charles Alison and New Territories South Senior Superintendent (Operations) Matthew Hemmings, paid a site visit to inspect the location and the performance of new radio repeaters at Fan Lau Kok.

Senior Superintendent Alison pointed out that the works had beefed up frontline officers' capability to combat illegal immigration and smuggling in the area by adopting new technology.

Fan Lau Kok is located in southwest of Lantau. Due to its close proximity to the Mainland and its shallow water environment, Fan Lau Kok is a strategic location that requires special police attention, being a spot of illegal immigration and smuggling; a location with many requests for police assistance and a well known radio blackspot.

Owing to unique topography, radio signal from the nearby base stations in Shek Pik and Ngon Ping were blocked by Keung Shan, resulting in a radio blackspot in the area. Even local mobile phone operators find this area a "dead zone" for the same reason.

Various technical solutions were considered in vain in the past. Options like building a base station in Keung Shan is not cost effective and setting up a radio repeater in Tai A Chau would have security and power supply issues. In 2011, a technology breakthrough was achieved in the radio repeater for outdoor environment - Interference Cancellation System. This new technology not only enhances the signal gain and selectivity of the radio repeater, but also sustains an operation in an arduous environment. With the support of Marine Department, radio repeaters were installed in the Fan Lau Kok Lighthouse and put into the operation in mid 2012.
