To deter drink driving during Christmas and New Year holidays, Road Safety Council (RSC) and Police Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ) have conducted a series of anti-drink driving publicity activities.

On December 13, RSC and TBHQ hosted the Anti-drink Driving Launching Ceremony 2012 at Lan Kwai Fong, with Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman, Dr Eric Cheng, Chief Superintendent (Traffic) Stephen Verralls, Commissioner of Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol, Mr Robert Chui, and Superintendent (Administration, Traffic) Stephen Baker officiating.

At the ceremony, Dr Cheng pointed out that anti-drink driving was one of the main publicity topics for RSC, and that RSC had been working closely with the police to enhance public knowledge of road safety through publicity and education.

At the same time, TBHQ officers demonstrated at the ceremony the new dual mode Drager Alcotest 6810 device, which the police have been using for conducting both pre-screening and screening breath tests since last July.

After the ceremony, the officiating guests proceeded to the bars and restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong to distribute leaflets and souvenirs. Some of the customers invited to take the breath test showed a great interest in the readings produced by the Drager Alcotest 6810 device.

After the launching ceremony, RSC members and Regional Road Safety Teams distributed leaflets and souvenirs in bar areas such as Lan Kwai Fong, Wan Chai, Yau Tsim Mong, Sai Kung and Yuen Long. RSC has also enlisted the assistance of over 50 restaurants and bars in distributing anti-drink driving leaflets to their patrons. In addition, the anti-drink driving message was driven home through radio Announcement of Public Interests, bus advertisements and banners put up at flyovers across the territory.

During the festive season, the police also stepped up their own publicity and enforcement action against drink driving.
