During
the
weekends before the Dragon Boat Festival, I had some very good time
with my dragon boat team and my family. I joined two dragon boat races
in Sai Kung in support of mentally handicapped students. It has
been six years since I first met them in the same event in 2006.
Looking back on the past six years, I am grateful that these students
have given me a good opportunity to paddle with them in open sea.
I still remember that despite their mental or physical handicaps, the students, when facing the open sea, overcame their fear, enjoyed the sport and cheered on their teammates. They sang loudly as the sky got cloudy and practised hard and never gave up in face of challenges. I appreciated that they cherished every moment of meeting, and paddling with, the volunteers. When we got onto our dragon boat, it raced as if it had an engine. The students' parents smiled on shore and were happy that their children have grown up. They have really grown up and become more independent and mature. They no longer need their parents to carry umbrellas to shield them from the summer sun. They liked being sun-tanned and enjoyed the salty breeze. This was the friendship we have built onboard our dragon boat over the years. This was also a symbol of their courage and bravery. I'm so proud of them. The students never missed any chance to express their gratitude to the volunteers for their partnership by either waving their hands, singing or giving them a big hug. They were full of love - genuine love. I missed them after each practice and I'm looking forward to the next Sunday practice. The students have grown up. Last year, we joined two races and did our best in the races. We continued the legend by pulling off medals and trophies, not only for themselves, but also as a token of thanks for the love from their parents. What I want to say is: "My students, I'm so proud of you!" I have experienced many ups and downs in my life. I'm so lucky to have met these students who have given me a good lesson about life. I've witnessed how they overcame fear and hurdles. From their courage and faith, I have learned that it is simply keeping your pace and riding out rough sea and storm, and never stepping back or stopping where you have fallen. They paddled with broad smiles and they laughed loudly. I have learned from the students that we can live every moment of life with love and joy. They are so genuine and beautiful, and are the best examples of living with pride and dignity. I love you all my teammates! Chan
