Officers help protect animals |
||
The Force introduced an Animal Watch Scheme in conjunction with other government departments and organisations in October 2011. There are in fact a lot of animal lovers within the Force who have built up a strong bond with animals both at and outside work. At present, some animal lovers in the Force are offering volunteer services as SPCA inspectors in their own time. After work, they put on SPCA uniforms for another mission of rescuing animals. In an interview with Offbeat, six of the police volunteers shared their experiences and feelings as volunteer SPCA inspectors. Ah Fai is dedicated to handling major incidents as an Emergency Unit officer. In his capacity as an SPCA inspector, he rescues animals instead of men and women and young and old. Ah Cat is also an Emergency Unit officer, who keeps four dogs and one cat at home. In her views, animals need the love and respect of human. As a police officer, Ah Cat resents cruelty to animals and uses her volunteer service as a platform to promote care to animals. The accounts by Ah Fai and Ah Cat underline their sense of mission in protecting animals. Louis works in partnership with dogs everyday as a Police Dog Unit Sergeant. His love of dogs extended to other animals when he joined the SPCA as a volunteer inspector three years ago. "I'm glad to be able to apply the knowledge I've learned at work and from SPCA to rescue animals. My official and volunteer roles complement each other to my benefit. The voluntary work at SPCA allows me to understand better, and respond to, the needs of the public, and to provide professional assistance." Barry has worked for SPCA for three years and is highly regarded by other SPCA volunteer inspectors. Eager to protect and rescue animals, he chooses to work a 12-hour night shift at least once every month, simply because evening is the peak period of public calls for assistance. "It is a meaningful job to protect animals' well-being and relieve their pain," said Barry. After rescuing a kitten in 2010, Barry had the satisfaction of receiving a handmade thankyou card from the young owner. Besides working as auxiliary police officers, Captain and Joe also play the role of an SPCA Inspector. Their volunteer services reflect a citizen's love and respect for animals. OffBeat hopes this article would show other Force members the officers' respect for life and their zeal for protecting animals. In appreciating what the officers have contributed to animals, their colleagues may reflect more on, and dedicated themselves more to, their jobs. Pets Corner
