Since its establishment in May last year, the Volunteer Group of Yuen Long Police District has delivered a host of community services in a bid to strengthen police-community relations and disseminate messages of fighting and preventing crimes. The Volunteer Group comprises over 100 officers from Uniform Branch as well as crime, auxiliary and civilian units.

Shortly after their kick-off ceremony, the police volunteers visited the Pok Oi Hospital Yeung Chun Pui Care & Attention Home in Tin Shui Wai and treated the elders there to a drama to make them more aware of telephone and street scams. Last October, they assisted four elderly homes of Pok Oi Hospital in organising an "Elderly Talent Sports Day" at Tin Shui Wai Sports Stadium. The volunteers also joined the elderly in various competitions in a fun-filled afternoon.

The Non-ethnic Chinese Community in Yuen Long is also a service target for the Volunteer Group. In a bid to bridge communication gap and enhance mutual understanding, police volunteers enrolled for an Elementary Nepali Course organised by Yuen Long District (YLDIST) while volunteers from Pat Heung Division (PHDIV) spent their own time teaching Cantonese to African residents. In class, both parties gained a better understanding of each other's language and culture. Besides studies, the police volunteers also had friendly football matches with African students, promoting sportsmanship and social harmony.

The police volunteers also had basketball and football matches as well as exercises in running with local youths in a bid to inculcate proper values in them and steer them away from crimes and drugs.

In August last year, volunteers from Tin Shui Wai Division (TSWDIV) and local non-government organisations jointly hosted a one-day trip to Ocean Park for kids from single parent families.

In recognition of the Volunteer Group's community services, YLDIST held an "Outstanding Volunteer Award Presentation Ceremony" on December 7 last year, where more than 40 police volunteers received gold, silver and bronze awards from YLDIST Commander Tang Ping-keung. Among those warm-hearted volunteers, Inspector Tam Tsz-wai of Crime YLDIST and Police Constable Yau Ching-wai of TSWDIV were awarded the "Most Outstanding Volunteer Shield" for their contributions.

Among the many guests congratulating the awardees were the Head of Pok Oi Hospital Yeung Chun Pui Care & Attention Home, Ms Shek Wan-ping, and her staff. Ms Shek also presented certificates of appreciation to those volunteers who had organised the "Elderly Talent Sports Day".

"The community services the police volunteers have delivered fully underscore their spirit of serving the community", Ms Shek noted.

In response, the police volunteers pointed out that they realised "it's more a blessing to give than to receive". They also thanked community organisations for their support and recognition.
