The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Bureau is recruiting Inspectorate Officers to join the EOD Cadre. Those who successfully complete and pass an eight-week training course, to be held between August 12 and October 4, will be appointed to the cadre.

OffBeat has visited the EOD Depot and talked to some EOD Cadre members taking a re-licensing course.

"I really enjoy working on the EOD Cadre as a secondary duty," said Senior Inspector (SIP) Murphy Chan. "The spirit of comradeship is immense in what is a highly demanding and challenging job. The training is first-class and the equipment we use is the best available. It's a great feeling when you are deployed on the ground, knowing that you have the skills and kit to quickly render an explosive device safe."

SIP Ho Chi-chung, who is also on his annual relicensing course, was equally enthusiastic about his secondary duty. "It is the best course I have done since I joined the Force. Training covers explosives handling, terrorist tactics, robots, problem-solving and bomb disposal skills," he said. "The analytical training that I have received is really a big benefit to me in performing CID duties and defusing a bomb. It is also a great feeling to be part of something that is widely recognised as one of the best in the world."

Senior Bomb Disposal Officer Jimmy Yuen is proud of the standards the EOD Cadre has achieved. "I have spent many years on active bomb disposal operations, and I have never worked with officers as good as they. I watch them doing their jobs on the street with confidence and professionalism, which are truly inspirational. As we look to the future, we need more of this special breed to come forward for bomb disposal duties. They do what I have always known to be, quite simply, the best job in the world."

Application forms for the EOD Cadre are available on the Force NoticeBoard.
