Police College Director Cheng Se-lim signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chair Professor Gabriel Ng of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on a research project on training in police driving on February 27.

Under the collaborative project, the Police Driving and Traffic Training Centre of the college and the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the university will assess the visual attention and hazard perception abilities of police motorcycle riders through a series of neuro-psychological tests, and make recommendations on how to improve their visual attention or hazard perception abilities with suitable training.

"This is a pioneering collaborative research project on driving training, in which the neuro-psychological tests will provide a simple and cost effective solution to identify early police motorcycle riders with low visual attention or hazard perception abilities.  Suitable training can therefore be introduced to enhance their visual attention and hazard perception abilities," said Mr Cheng.

"The research findings will not only help improve the driving safety of our motorcycle riders but also, in the long run, that of civilian motorcyclists in Hong Kong," Mr Cheng added.
