Police rugby kids make debut at Hong Kong 7s

The Police Mini Rugby U7 team made their debut at the world renowned Hong Kong 7s held at the Hong Kong Stadium on March 22, taking part in a Mini Rugby Showcase, which was a curtain raiser for the main event.

Playing in front of a large crowd was a daunting challenge for the police kids, but they brought credits to the Force and pulled off victory in a close encounter with Hong Kong University/Sandy Bay. Cheered on by the crowd, the children performed extremely well and Happy Valley Divisional Commander John Carroll, who is Vice- chairman of Police Rugby Club, was on hand to congratulate and present them with their hard earned medals.

The following day on March 23, the U7 team and other members of Police Mini Rugby Club took part in a march-past parade of mini rugby clubs and international 7s teams in front of 40,000 cheering fans.

This was a great occasion and experience for the police children and two of the older ones were selected to be flag carriers, with Caitlyn Whitton given the honour of carrying the flag of England, a powerhouse of 7s rugby, whilst Nicky Lau carrying the flag of Portugal. All the kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to the 2014 Hong Kong 7s.

Mini Rugby offers an excellent way for children to stay healthy, master new skills and make new friends in a safe environment. Training, conducted by qualified coaches and Police Rugby Club members, is open to both boys and girls up to the age of 11. No previous experience is required and training is held at Police Sports and Recreation Club every Sunday between 10 am and 11.30 am.

There are no charges for joining mini rugby training, except the play kit. Force members interested in enrolling their children in mini rugby or playing rugby themselves may contact the Police Rugby Club on hkprugby@gmail.com .
