The Force has recently taken delivery of a number of new electric vehicles (EVs), the Renault Fluence ZE (Zero Emissions), which is recognisable at a glance by the charging ports on the front wings. The latest batch of 13 Renault Fluence ZE EVs is in addition to the electric scooters, small electric cars and electric motorcycles introduced between 2008 and 2012.

The Fluence is about the same size as a Honda Accord and the interior space is worthy of a medium saloon with ample elbow and legroom at the front and the rear. The electric motor on the new electric vehicle has a maximum power of 96 Brake Horsepower whilst the 22-Kilowatt battery takes just over seven hours to fully charge. There is also a system to recover energy on deceleration and this helps recharge the batteries.

The Fluence has a published range of 185 km although in reality an achievable range will vary between 80 km and 200 km, depending on driving conditions and the use of air conditioning and other equipment such as lights, radio, and siren. Unlike conventional vehicles, EVs are most economical in urban areas and in heavy traffic conditions.

Of the 13 new EVs, one is unmarked and used by CID whilst the others are marked and used by Divisions, Districts and Traffic. A further 56 Renault Fluence ZE EVs will be rolled out later this year, following which an assessment under operational circumstances for six months will determine whether or not EVs are really suitable for police work.
