Since 2009, Tuen Mun District (TMDIST) has been running a "Smart Tactical Unit" programme, under which police volunteers from the regular and auxiliary forces provide a variety of training for secondary school students in Tuen Mun.

This year, TMDIST has expanded the scale of the programme by enlisting the support of "Smart E-power" elderly fight crime ambassadors, students of Lingnan University and 150 secondary school students, including 30 Non-ethnic Chinese students. Apart from foot drill training, the programme offers booth design and mountain craft competitions in a bid to disseminate fight crime messages to different sectors of the community.

The training course consists of four parts. Part I covered team building to give secondary students a better idea of the significance of team spirit and lay the foundation for organising more training.

Part II was foot drill to instil discipline among the students. Station Sergeant (SSGT) Leung Kam-fai, a former training officer of Police College and Police Tactical Unit, acted as a judge for a foot drill competition.

In Part III, the students participated in a Fight Crime Game Booth Design Competition organised by Tuen Mun Junior Police Call.

Part IV was a competition in mountain craft, with "Student Tutor" leading the students to complete the hiking activity and police volunteers giving them encouragement along the route.

After completion of a chain of training activities, the prize presentation ceremony of the "Smart Tactical Unit 2013" was held in Yan Chai Hospital No. 2 Secondary School on May 18. Officiating at the ceremony were Castle Peak Divisional Commander Lau Mei-yam, Chairman of Tuen Mun District JPC Honorary Presidents Council, Mr Yeung Siu-wai, Chairman of Tuen Mun District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Chow Kam-cheung, and chairpersons of the Primary and Secondary School Heads Associations in Tuen Mun.
