不少英文諺語都包含某些地方或國家的名稱。舉例來說"not for all the tea in China"，意思是指中國盛產茶葉和供應全球，因此"all the tea in China"代表巨大的財富，而"not for all the tea in China"便引申為「給某人再多的財富，他也不會做某事」的意思。又例如，"To send someone to Coventry"是指「排斥、杯葛某人」，因為在十七世紀，英國曾發生內戰，戰敗一方的軍隊被驅逐到科芬特里（Coventry），當地居民都排斥這些流放軍人，不願與他們來往。
