Man jailed for custody or control of counterfeit notes

A 30-year-old Indian man was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment at the District Court today (February 7) after being convicted of counterfeit banknotes related offence.

The court heard that Police Commercial Crime Bureau conducted an intelligence-led operation against a counterfeit currency syndicate in a building on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui on July 20, 2005.

Police officers intercepted the defendant after he had left a guesthouse in the building and found 13 pieces of counterfeit HK$500 banknotes in his possession.

He was subsequently arrested and later charged with custody or control of counterfeit notes.

The man pleaded guilty at the District Court and the sentence was meted out today.
