Fight youth crime competition launched (with photo)

The "Hang Seng Bank - Help the Police Fight Youth Crime Competition 2006" was launched today (March 23) to enhance youngsters' alertness of juvenile crimes and encourage them to help Police fight crime.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, said: "Police will continue to work closely with Government departments and the community including schools, parents and relevant organisations to prevent and fight youth crime."

Mr Lee said that the competition was a good example of Police-community cooperation and hoped it would strengthen young people's understanding of the consequences of drug abuse.

The biennial competition, which is held for the 16th time, is organised by the Police with sponsorship from Hang Seng Bank and Qantas Airways Limited.

In this year's competition, with the theme "Anti-drug abuse", participants will be evaluated on their capabilities through web games, essay writing, tests in leadership skills and interviews.

It is open to primary, secondary and tertiary students, and winners will be awarded scholarships and have the chance to visit Australia as Hong Kong's fight crime ambassadors.

During the ceremony, Mr Lee, on behalf of the Police, received a cheque for $450,000 from Mr Raymond Or, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, as the Bank's sponsorship of the competition.

Mr Or said: "Hang Seng is pleased to be sponsoring this competition for the seventh consecutive time. By supporting this event, we are encouraging young people to adopt a healthy and positive lifestyle and helping them to become responsible citizens."

Marketing Manager, Greater China of Qantas Airways Limited, Ms Evelyn Lee, presented air tickets to Mr Lee to sponsor winners' trip to Australia.

Also present at today's ceremony was Member of the Fight Crime Committee, Ms Vivien Chan.

Competition entry forms are available at Police Public Relations Branch, Police Community Relations Offices, Junior Police Call clubs, District Offices and Hang Seng Bank branches (excluding offices at MTR stations and the Lantau Airport Railway Station). The deadline for applications is April 24.
