Men jailed for counterfeit banknotes offences

Three men aged 20 to 31 were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from one year to three years upon conviction of counterfeit banknotes related offences at the District Court today (June 28).

The court heard officers of Police Commercial Crime Bureau mounted an operation and arrested the three men at a residential unit in Lok Wah Estate, Sau Mau Ping on January 27 this year. A total of 20 pieces of counterfeit $500 banknotes, one piece of counterfeit $100 banknote and a quantity of equipment for counterfeiting banknotes were seized.

Further investigations revealed that among the three arrested men, a 20-year-old man had taken a taxi from Lok Wah Estate in Sau Mau Ping to Choi Wan Estate in Wong Tai Sin on the night of January 26, 2006 and he paid the taxi fare with one counterfeit $500 banknote.

The three men were subsequently charged with offences including counterfeiting banknotes, custody of counterfeiting material, custody of counterfeiting notes and passing counterfeit notes. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to imprisonment at the District Court today.
