Marine Police seized about $8.5 million worth of suspected smuggled goods

Marine Police seized about $8.5 million worth of suspected smuggled goods in Sha Tau Kok and A Chau last night (September 22) during an anti-smuggling operation.

At about 9 pm yesterday, officers of the Task Force of Marine Police spotted a speedboat with cargo and four people onboard travelling from the seashore of Shun Hing Street in Sha Tau Kok towards A Chau.

Officers then signaled the speedboat to stop but the speedboat ignored and steamed to A Chau. The coxswain and three passengers onboard unloaded the cargo comprising about 40 boxes of laser heads and mobile phone components with an estimated value of $3 million ashore of A Chau and returned to Shun Hing Street.

The four people disembarked in Shun Hing Street and fled away. Marine Police later located a light goods vehicle, three medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and a private car in Shun Hing Street with a quantity of lazer heads, mobile phone componenets, computer hard disks and electrical appliances worth about $5.5 million
onboard the vehicles. Two men aged 25 and 26 onboard one of the MGVs were intercepted and subsequently arrested for exporting unmanifested cargo.

The two men were each released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Investigations by the Regional Crime Unit of Marine Police are underway.
