Man jailed for possession of equipment for making false instruments

A man, aged 42, was convicted of possession of equipment for making false instruments was sentenced to four years' imprisonment at the District Court today (November 1).

The court heard that officers of the Commercial Crime Bureau mounted an intelligence-based operation in Wong Tai Sin in June 2005. Officers raided a residential unit at Tung Tau Estate and arrested a 42-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman following the seizure two computers and a USB thumb-drive. In addition, a large number of information on credit card accounts and an operating program for a magnetic stripe card encoder installed in the computer were found.

After investigation, the man was charged with one count of possession of equipment for making false instruments in August this year while the woman was released.

The man pleaded guilty to the charge at the District Court and the sentence was handed down today.
