Man sentenced for custody and attempting to pass counterfeit banknotes

A 22-year-old Pakistani man was convicted of custody and attempting to pass counterfeit banknotes and sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment at the District Court today (November 14).

The court heard that police officers found the man acting suspiciously on Anchor Street in Mong Kok in the afternoon of March 30, 2006. He was kept under observation and was later found trying to use a $500 counterfeit banknote to make purchase at a store nearby.

During the purchase, he left suddenly with the counterfeit banknote. Police officers intercepted him on Ivy Street and a total of eight pieces of $500 counterfeit banknotes were seized in his possession.

The man was later charged with one count of custody of counterfeit banknotes and one count of attempting to pass counterfeit banknotes.

He was convicted of the offences and the sentence was handed down today.
