Hong Kong Police Youth Road Safety Quiz launched (with photo)

The "Bank of China (Hong Kong) - Hong Kong Police Youth Road Safety Quiz", organised by the Police and sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK), was launched today (December 14).

Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, said: "Education and publicity are the most essential aspects of road safety promotion. Educating children about road safety is very important as it will help improve the behaviour of road users and cultivate a caring attitude towards one another on the road."

"We hope that the meaningful and challenging quiz will help young people to know more about road safety and cultivate the right behaviour as road users," he added.

During the ceremony, Mr Lee, on behalf of the Police, received a cheque for $1,000,000 from the Deputy Chief Executive of BOCHK, Mr Gao Yingxin, as the Bank's sponsorship and promotion of the quiz.

Mr Gao said: "We join hands with the Hong Kong Police to launch the Youth Road Safety Quiz in order to educate our younger generations about the proper knowledge and safest ways of driving and crossing the road by means of innovative, interesting and interactive games."

"It is of utmost importance to promote the messages to the general public, especially the youth, about road safety, and thus to reduce the number of accidents on the road. This will not only help secure our life, but also ensure that Hong Kong, a metropolis with busy traffic, remains one of the world's safest cities for road users."

The quiz, in the form of on-line games, is open to primary and secondary students as well as young people aged between 18 and 30.

Participants will be tested on their knowledge of common road signs, road safety regulations for pedestrians, cyclists and passengers as well as traffic laws. Winners will be granted cash awards and certificates. The total award values for each competition group range from $10,000 to $20,000.

Participants should complete the on-line games at the competition website http://www.roadsafetyquiz.hk within the period from 6 pm today (December 14) to 6 pm on January 13, 2007.

In addition to individual competitions, four secondary schools with the highest total marks obtained by their top five students in the on-line games will take part in a final live quiz.

There will also be a project-writing competition for Junior Police Call (JPC) members. JPC members should form teams to join the competition and hand in their road safety project reports to Police Public Relations Branch, 11/F Arsenal House, Police Headquarters, 1 Arsenal Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong on or before January 13, 2007.
