Marine Police seized $0.25 million worth of smuggled goods

Marine Police arrested a 47-year-old local man and seized $0.25 million worth of suspected smuggled goods off East Ping Chau this (December 28) morning during an anti-smuggling operation.

Shortly after 11.30 pm last (December 27) night, officers of the Small Boat Division spotted a suspicious vessel off Long Harbour heading towards East Ping Chau at high speed.

Police vessels gave chase and intercepted the speedboat off south of East Ping Chau at 1 am this morning.

Twenty-four boxes of suspected smuggled goods including computer hard disks and LCD projectors, with a total value of about $0.25 million, were found inside a secret compartment under a fuel tank behind the coxswain seat.

The 47-year-old male coxswain was subsequently arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo and alteration of vessel for the purpose of smuggling.

The case has been taken over by the Customs and Excise Department for further investigations.
