Two men arrested for smuggling $19 million electronic products

Marine Police arrested two men and seized a large quantity of electronic products worth some $19 million at Wong Shek Pier in Sai Kung yesterday (May 17).

In the evening of May 17, Marine Regional Task Force and Small Boat Division mounted an anti-smuggling operation at Wong Shek Pier. Three speedboats were spotted in Nam She Wan heading into Long Harbour while two light goods vehicles (LGVs) approaching Wong Shek Pier shortly afterwards.

The LGVs were then seen unloading cargoes onto the speedboats which berthed at the pier. When Marine Police officers took action, the people unloading the goods abandoned the cargos on the vehicles and the pier, jumped onboard the speedboats and made good escape.

The two LGVs were intercepted at scene and a 36-year-old male driver was arrested for assisting in exporting unmanifested cargo after failing to produce a valid manifest. Another 34-year-old male driver surrendered to the Police shortly afterwards and was subsequently arrested for the same offence.

A total of 219 boxes of contraband products including computer harddisks, central processing units as well as watch movements worth about $19 million were seized at scene and on the vehicles.

Investigations by Regional Crime Unit of Marine Police are proceeding.
