Public urged to use public transport to beaches in Southern District

Police today (June 1) advised members of the public to make full use of public transport when going to beaches in Southern District on Hong Kong Island during weekends and public holidays.

With the approach of summer holidays, Police anticipated that many holiday-goers would visit beaches in the district. The following traffic arrangements may be implemented in the area when necessary:

Road Closure
------------

1. Public light buses will be prohibited from entering Beach Road from Repulse Bay Road;
2. South Bay Road at the south of South Bay Close will be closed except for residents and public transports when the carparks at Repulse Bay Beach are full;
3. Stanley Beach Road will be closed except for residents and public transport when the carparks at Stanley Main Beach are full;
4. The unnamed road leading to St Stephen's Beach will be closed except for residents and public transport when the carparks at St Stephen's Beach are full;
5. Big Wave Bay Road will be closed except for public transport and residents when Big Wave Bay carparks are full;
6. The road leading to Shek O Headland will be closed except for residents; and
7. The road leading to Shek O public carparks will be closed except for residents and public transport.

Traffic diversion
-----------------

1. Vehicles on eastbound Repulse Bay Road will not be permitted to make a 'U' turn at its junction with South Bay Road;
2. Vehicles on Repulse Bay Road will be banned from entering Repulse Bay Hotel carpark when it is full; and
3. Except for residents, vehicle on southbound South Bay Road will be diverted into South Bay Close via Beach Road and return to northbound South Bay Road for leaving the area if the carparks on South Bay Road are full.

Suspension of Parking Spaces and Taxi Stand

1. The metered parking spaces on Island Road will be suspended from noon on Saturdays to 8 pm on Sundays and from 9 am to 8 pm on public holidays between June 2 and September 9;
2. Fifteen parking spaces next to the covered walkway at Shek O Beach public carpark will be suspended from 12.30 pm on Saturdays to 7 pm on Sundays; and from 6 am to 7 pm on public holidays between June 2 and September 2; and
3. The taxi stand on Repulse Bay Road opposite to Repulse Bay Hotel will be suspended from 9 am to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays between June 3 and September 9.

Bus Stop Arrangement

1. The Central-bound bus stop at Repulse Bay Road near South Bay Road will be suspended from 9 am to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays between June 3 and September 9;
2. Temporary bus stop arrangement at Repulse Bay Road opposite to house Number 101 will be implemented from 9 am to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays between June 3 and September 9;
3. Temporary bus stop arrangement at Island Road opposite to the Golf Club will be implemented from noon on Saturdays to 8 pm on Sundays and from 9 am to 8 pm on public holidays between June 2 and September 9; and
4. To facilitate bus operations of bus routes No. 9 and 309 in summer swimming seasons, the bus terminus will be relocated to the suspended parking spaces area next to the covered walkway at Shek O Beach public carpark as per the suspension schedule.
