Man sentenced for passing counterfeit banknotes

A 52-year-old Taiwanese man was sentenced to two years' imprisonment upon conviction of counterfeit banknotes related offence at the District Court today (June 29).

The court heard that in the afternoon of June 9, 2004, the man patronized a money exchange shop on Bute Street in Mong Kok to exchange 30 pieces of US$100 banknotes into Hong Kong dollars. The shopkeeper found the banknotes were counterfeit and a report was made. Upon arrival of the Police, the man had left scene.

The Commercial Crime Bureau took over the case for investigations. Details of the man were obtained and he was arrested when entering Hong Kong from Macau on April 27, 2007. He was charged with one count of passing counterfeit banknotes on the next day and appeared in the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court.

The case was transferred to District Court on June 15, 2007. The man pleaded guilty to the charge and the sentence was handed down today.
