Marine Police seize contraband products worth $9.5 million

Marine Police have arrested two men and seized a large quantity of computer products worth $9.5 million and illicit cigarettes worth $1.2 million. The arrests and seizures were made in two anti-smuggling operations at Sai Wan Tsui and Mong Tseng yesterday and today (September 10 and 11).

About 7.30 last night (September 10), Marine Regional Task Force carrying out an anti-smuggling operation spotted people unloading goods from three medium goods vehicles onto three speedboats. The people fled in the speedboats when they saw police officers, leaving the three vehicles.

A large quantity of contraband electronic products including computer hard disks, notebook computers, universal serial buses, optical pick-ups and some digital-audio consoles worth $9.5 million were seized.

Two men, aged 38 and 45, were arrested for allegedly assisting in the export of unmanifested cargo and they are being detained for further inquiries. Investigations by Regional Crime Unit of Marine Police are continuing.

A Marine Deep Bay Sub-unit spotted two wooden vessels heading toward the river entrance near Mong Tseng in Yuen Long, about 2am today (September 11). Officers continued to watch the vessels and saw four men jump off into an area of swamp. A subsequent search failed to find the men.

A total of 72 carton boxes of smuggled cigarettes worth $1.2 million were seized from the vessels. The case has been handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for further investigation.
