Fatal traffic accident on Lantau Island

Police are investigating a traffic accident on Lantau Island this afternoon (September 28) in which a 51-year-old man died and three men were injured.

About 5pm, a police vehicle stopped on a nearside hard shoulder of North Lantau Highway Airport bound carriageway near Siu Ho Wan after a tyre burst. A tow track, which was summoned for assistance, parked in front of the police vehicle to change the broken tyre. During the course, a coach travelling on the same carriageway hit onto the rear part of the police vehicle, which was subsequently pushed forward and hit the tow truck.

After the impact, the 51-year-old coach driver was trapped inside the compartment and was later rescued by firemen.

Sustaining serious injuries, the man was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital where he was later certified dead at 6.08pm.

The 40-year-old driver of the tow truck, the 29-year-old driver and a 30-year-old police officer on the police vehicle were also injured and were sent to Princess Margaret Hospital.

Investigations by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories South, are proceeding.
