Road safety campaign targeting drink driving ************************************** Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving from tomorrow (February 1) to February 10. Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests in bar areas and distribute publicity leaflets at cross harbour tunnel tollbooths, petrol stations and carparks to appeal to drivers not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will be taken against offenders. Police figures show that there were 15,223 traffic accidents in 2007, an increase of 374 cases when compared with 2006. Among these cases, 103 involved drink driving, an increase of four cases compared with 2006. "Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said. Police Report No. 7 Ends/Thursday, January 31, 2008
