Road safety campaign targeting drink driving ************************************** Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving from tomorrow (March 21) to March 24. Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests in bar areas and distribute publicity leaflets at cross harbour tunnel tollbooths, petrol stations and carparks to appeal to drivers not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will be taken against offenders. Police figures showed that there were 2 291 accidents in the first two months of 2008, a decrease of 68 cases when compared with the same period last year. Among these cases, six involved drink driving, a decrease of ten cases when compared with the same period last year. "Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said. Police Report No.2 Ends/Thursday, March 20, 2008
