Territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving
***************************************

Police have issued 213 fixed penalty tickets and 3 692 summonses to motorists during a territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving concluded on July 6.

The campaign, codenamed "Kickstarter", was held between June 30 and July 6 with an aim to remind drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

A total of 213 fixed penalty tickets and 3 692 summonses and 69 verbal warnings were issued to drivers for various traffic offences with special emphasis on offences relating to speeding, failing to wear seatbelts, using mobile phones by holding them in hands and failing to comply with traffic signals. A driver was also arrested for drink driving during the campaign.

Meanwhile, officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 279 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 29 571 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles as well as members of the public. People were encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to Police or the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.

"We hope the campaign could enhance road safety awareness of motorists and eventually achieve the road safety vision of 'Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal'," a Police spokesman said.

The campaign is one of the road safety campaigns conducted by Police in 2008. A three-pronged approach of publicity, education and enforcement is adopted to fight against traffic offences.
