Operation against drink driving

The Traffic Police conducted a four-hour operation against drink driving along the New Territories bound carriageways which was concluded at 6.30 am today (September 4).

The Task Force of the New Territories South Traffic mounted two Laser gun operations with six associated road blocks on Tai Po Road and Kwai Chung Road.

During the operation, one driver was arrested for speeding and failing to provide a specimen of breath for screening breath test, five were arrested for speeding and drink driving and three were arrested for drink driving. A further two were summoned for speeding.

Additionally, 67 fixed penalty tickets were issued for speeding.

The highest speed recorded by a drink driver on Tai Po Road was 139 kilometres per hour. The speed limit for the thoroughfare is 80 kilometres per hour.

A Police spokesman stressed that drink driving is a major contributory factor in serious road accidents.

ˇ§Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three yearsˇ¦ imprisonment and penalized for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving,ˇ¨ he added.
