Anti-burglary operation nets 49 persons

Police arrested a total of 49 persons and seized a large quantity of stolen goods in an anti-burglary operation, codenamed "Expunger". The operation started on September 19 and is still continuing.

The Kowloon West Region has listed "burglary" a focus area in the region. After Police continuous efforts in the prevention and detection of the crime, the number of burglary has significantly reduced by 57 per cent from 2,395 in 2003 to 1,356 last year.

Crime officers from the region started the large-scale operation at midnight on September 19 and the operation is still continuing. Up till now, officers have raided and checked various locations throughout the region, resulting in the arrest of a total of 49 persons, in which 39 for various offences. Nine men and one woman, aged between 27 and 52, were arrested for burglary, going equipped for stealing and handling stolen goods.

Police also seized a large quantity of suspected stolen properties including valuable dried seafood, tonic food and medicine worth $140,000.

During the operation, publicity leaflets were also distributed to members of the public advising them on ways to prevent burglary and enhancing their awareness against the crime.

It is hoped that through this well-coordinated operation, the number of burglary in the region will see a further fall while Police will continue its strenuous efforts against the crime.
