Man arrested for spreading rumors on bank run

Police today (September 27) arrested a 34-year-old man for access computer with criminal or dishonest intent after he was suspected to be in connection with an online message found on a discussion forum appealing people to withdraw deposits from one of the Hong Kong financial institutes and alleging it would go bank run.

The online message was found on Friday (September 26). Officers of Technology Crime Division of Police Commercial Crime Bureau swiftly arrested the suspect in Shau Kei Wan in this afternoon. He is now being detained for investigation.

Police remind the public that sending malicious message against financial institutes not only attracts civil liability, it also likely to commit an offence of access computer with criminal or dishonest intent under the Crime Ordinance, which is liable for five years imprisonment.

Police also appeal to the public to use the Internet lawfully and not to send irresponsible messages.
