Man arrested for spreading rumors on bank close down

Police yesterday (September 30) arrested a 18-year-old man for access to computer with criminal or dishonest intent after he was suspected to be in connection with an online message found on a discussion forum alleging that a Hong Kong financial institution would be closed down.

The online message was posted on last Thursday (September 25). After extensive investigations, officers of the Commercial Crime Bureau arrested the suspect in Kwai Chung last night. He is now being detained for further investigation.

Police remind the public that sending malicious message not only incurs civil liability, it may also commit an offence of access to computer with criminal or dishonest intent under the Crimes Ordinance, which is liable to five years' imprisonment.

Police also appeal to the public to use the Internet lawfully and not to send irresponsible messages.
