Four people sentenced over counterfeit banknotes offences

Four mainlanders aged between 24 and 54 were today (October 2) sentenced to imprisonment terms ranging from 20 to 32 months after being convicted of passing and possessing counterfeit banknotes.

District Court was told that on May 4 this year, Police officers arrested two male and two female two-way permit holders in Sai Ying Pun after they were found shopping in some stores with fake $100 Renminbi (RMB) banknotes in the area. Police officers subsequently seized 102 pieces of fake $100 RMB banknotes and one piece of fake $20 RMB banknote in their possession.

Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) took up the case for further investigations. Enquiries showed that the defendants had also used some fake $100 RMB banknotes to shop in Wan Chai area on May 5. CCB officers subsequently seized 14 pieces of counterfeit $100 RMB banknotes from the shops concerned and 601 pieces of counterfeit $100 RMB banknotes from their guesthouse.

They were later charged with passing and possessing counterfeit bank notes.
