Suspect shot by policeman in Tsing Yi
**********************

Police are investigating an open fire case in which a police officer shot a 27-year-old male suspect in Tsing Yi this morning (October 14).

A police sergeant and two constables found the man acting suspiciously while patrolling outside Wang Ching House in Cheung Wang Estate about 9.30am. When they tried to intercept the man, he allegedly tried to attack the officers with a fruit knife and then fled towards Cheung Hang Estate.

The officers chased the man who subsequently approached a group of elderly women in a sitting-out area near Hang Yip House in Cheung Hang Estate.

Believing that the man might threaten the women's safety, the sergeant fired two shots at the man after he ignored police verbal warnings.

The man who sustained a gunshot wound to the left buttock was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital. He has been arrested for possession of offensive weapon and attempted wounding and is being detained pending further enquiries.

Investigations by District Crime Squad of Kwai Tsing are under way.

Police urged anyone who saw the incident or have any information to offer to contact the investigating officers at 2410 2363 or Tsing Yi Police Station at 2431 9123.
