Road safety campaign to promote safe cycling
********************************************

Police earlier this week concluded a territory-wide campaign to raise public awareness on safe cycling.

The operation, codenamed "Goldensun", started on October 15 and ended on October 21 and resulted in the issue of 278 verbal warnings and 353 summonses to cyclists.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited a total of 478 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks, railway stations and vicinity of fast food shops and distributed 20 134 leaflets during the campaign.

The operation was the latest in an on-going series of campaigns conducted by Police during 2008 using a mix of publicity, education and enforcement actions to target cyclist offences. It aimed at reminding cyclists, especially those who used bicycles to deliver fast food, of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibility.

A police spokesman said that cyclists should comply with the road traffic legislations and any offenders will be subjected to fines and penalties similar to other motorists.
