****************************************************

Six men, aged between 53 and 60, were jailed for 40 to 54 months at the District Court today (October 31) after being convicted of conspiracy to pass counterfeit currency notes.

The court heard that the two men, aged 55 and 60, turned up at a local bank in Central on September 10, 2007 and produced 300 pieces of counterfeit 20 Kuwait Dinar in exchange for Hong Kong dollars which worth about $138,000. The bank subsequently discovered that the Kuwait Dinar received were counterfeit banknotes and a report was made to the police.

Officers of Commercial Crime Bureau arrested the two men when they attempted to make further deposit of 2,100 pieces of counterfeit 20 Kuwait Dinar , which worth about $966,000, to the same bank three days later (September 13, 2007). Two other men, aged 56 and 60, were arrested outside the bank.

After investigations, two more men, aged 53 and 59, were also arrested at a hotel room in Yau Ma Tei on the same day.

The six men were suspected to be international fraudsters and they were all charged with conspiracy to pass counterfeit currency notes. The two 60-year-men were also charged with making or possessing equipment for making a false instrument. They were convicted of the charges and sentences were handed down today.

Police will continue to take stringent enforcement action to fight against these illegal activities, including the making or possession of counterfeit banknotes.
