Man jailed for passing counterfeit banknotes

A 32-year-old man was today (December 2) jailed for 26 months after being convicted of three counts of passing counterfeit banknotes.

The Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts heard that the defendant produced three pieces of $500 counterfeit banknotes when he was shopping and spending around in Hung Hom area from March to April in 2008. Feeling suspicious of the authenticity of the banknote, a report was made to the Police.

After investigations, the 32-year-old man was arrested in Hung Hom in June 2008.

The defendant was subsequently charged with three counts of passing counterfeit banknotes and sentence was handed down today.

Police will continue to take stringent enforcement action to fight against these illegal activities, including the possession of counterfeit banknotes.
