Fatal traffic accident in Lok Ma Chau

Police are investigating a traffic accident in Lok Ma Chau this morning (January 23) in which six men, aged between 30 to 54, were killed.

About 7.10am, a medium goods vehicle (MGV) driven by a 41-year-old man was travelling along the Chau Tau section of Castle Peak Road towards Lok Ma Chau. Approaching Kwu Tung, it rammed into a taxi which was travelling on the opposite lane.

After the incident, the 54-year-old taxi driver and five male passengers, aged between 30 and 47, sustained serious injuries and were certified dead at the scene by ambulancemen.

The 41-year-old MGV driver was arrested for drink driving and dangerous driving causing death. He sustained minor injuries and was sent to North District Hospital for treatment.

Investigations by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North, are underway.

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident or who has any information is urged to contact the investigating officers on 2675 3325.

A Police spokesman stressed that Police would continue to take stringent enforcement action against drink driving.

"All motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol," the spokesman said.

"Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and imprisonment of three years upon conviction with 10 driving-offence points incurred and disqualification from driving for at least three months, whilst the maximum penalty for dangerous driving causing death is a $50,000 fine and 10 yearsˇ¦ imprisonment with 10 driving-offence points incurred and disqualification from driving for at least two years," he added.
