Territory-wide campaign to promote driving safety
*************************************************

Police yesterday (February 24) concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles the importance of safe driving.

The campaign, codenamed "Kickstarter", started on last Friday (February 20) and ended yesterday had resulted in the issue of 49 verbal warnings, 131 summonses and 1,530 fixed penalty tickets to drivers as well as six arrests for drink driving offences. Of the total number of summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued to drivers, 32.4 per cent were issued for speeding, 12.0 per cent for mobile phone offence, 6.3 per cent for seat belt offence and 4.1 per cent for failing to comply with traffic signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 146 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 12,191 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles as well as members of the public. The public were encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.

It was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police since the beginning of 2009 using a mix of publicity, education and enforcement to target such offences.

"We hope that the campaign could enhance public awareness road safety in pursuit of the road safety vision: 'Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal'," a Police spokesman said.
