Fugitives handed back to Hong Kong
******************************

A 46-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman wanted for conspiracy to defraud were handed over by the United Kingdom (UK) Police to the Hong Kong Police today (February 26).

The couple is on suspicion of producing 142 suspected fake Bills of Lading to five local financial institutions between June and November 1998 to apply for loans and a total sum of $50 million was credited to their company accounts by the institutions. The Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) received reports of the suspected fraud but the couple left Hong Kong in December the same year.

In October 2006, the couple was arrested by the UK Police in London and extradition hearings have been conducted since 2007 in the UK. In January this year, the High Court of the UK ordered the UK Police to surrender the couple to Hong Kong. They were escorted back to Hong Kong by CCB officers today.
