****************************************************

Police yesterday (March 19) concluded a two-week territory-wide pedestrian road safety campaign aimed at educating pedestrians, in particular senior citizens, on road safety.

A total of 743 verbal warnings and 878 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from March 6 to March 19.

During the above period, police issued 660 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 94 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge or pedestrian subway, and 71 summonses for climbing over or through kerbside fence or central reservation onto a carriageway.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams have distributed 31,391 publicity leaflets at 661 locations across the territory, including traffic accident black spots, and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to pay attention to traffic when crossing the roads. Those who fail to comply with the related rules may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000 " a Police spokesman said.
