Road safety campaign to promote safe cycling
*************************************

Police yesterday (April 29) concluded a territory-wide campaign to raise public awareness on safe cycling.

The operation, codenamed "Goldensun", was conducted from April 21 to April 29 and resulted in the issue of 393 verbal warnings and 326 summonses to cyclists.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited a total of 487 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks, railway stations and vicinity of fast food shops and distributed 15,687 leaflets during the campaign.

The operation was the latest in an on-going series of campaigns conducted by Police during 2009 using a mix of publicity, education and enforcement actions to target cyclist offences. It aimed at reminding cyclists, especially those who used bicycles to deliver fast food, of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibility.

A police spokesman said that in the first three months in 2009, a total of 289 persons were injured and 3 died in 333 traffic accidents which involved cyclists. Police reminded that cyclists should comply with the road traffic legislations and any offenders will be subjected to fines and penalties similar to other motorists.
