Fight crime competition opens for enrolment tomorrow
****************************************************

Primary and secondary school students are invited to join the "Protect Yourself from Crime and Predators On-line" Video Competition to be launched tomorrow (May 4) to give their creativity full play in promoting the anti-crime message.

Organised by the Fight Crime Committee (FCC) Publicity Sub-Committee and the Police Public Relations Branch, the competition is one of the publicity initiatives to alert the public, in particular youngsters, to the potential risks and various possible crimes arising from on-line activities and contacts, which is a major theme of the fight crime publicity campaign this year.

A Police spokesman said: "Through participating in the event, it is hoped that teenagers can better understand the nature and latest trends of on-line crimes which will help enhance their vigilance and prevent them from committing offences or falling prey to criminals in the virtual world.

"They are also reminded to exercise great care when making on-line friends and take necessary precautions to protect themselves."

The competition will be divided into two categories: Primary School and Secondary School. Each team comprising no more than five students is required to present the theme in their own words and images in a one-minute video, which should be submitted before July 24, 2009. There is no limit on the number of teams and entries from each school.

After adjudication and on-line voting to be conducted in September, a champion, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up and five merit prizes will be awarded in each category. Winning teams of the Secondary School category will also have the chance to join a study tour to Guangdong Province in late December.

In addition, the creative ideas of winning entries may be adopted in the production of the Government's Announcement in the Public Interest on this theme.

"While expecting interesting videos from students appealing to their peers and the public at large, it is hoped that they will also enjoy the learning and production process in the course of the competition," the spokesman added.

The competition, sponsored by Hang Seng Bank, is co-organised with the Education Bureau, Information Services Department, Radio Television Hong Kong and Sing Tao Daily.

Details of the competition are available on www.etvonline.tv or www.singtao.com. Deadline for enrolment is May 21, 2009. For enquiries, please call 2798 2443.
