******************

A man and a woman charged in connection with a kidnap case in June last year were today (May 8) sentenced at the High Court to 11 year and four months' and three year and four months' jail for kidnapping and false imprisonment respectively.

The court heard that the 22-year-old male defendant, Mohammad Nadim, and the 27-year-old female defendant, Kaur Baljit, kidnapped a seven-year-old Pakistan boy in the Sai Kung area on June 19, 2008.

They demanded a ransom of $200,000 from the victim's family afterwards.

Upon receiving the report, officers of the Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon East, took over the investigations.

The officers intercepted a private car at Lin Cheung Road at the junction with Tonkin Street West and rescued the boy from the boot of the private car on the same day.

The victim's family did not paid any ransom in the incident.

The officers arrested five Pakistani men and an Indian woman, aged between 18 and 31, on June 19 and 20 last year respectively.

Two of the arrested persons were later charged and found guilty. The other four were released unconditionally.

The sentences were meted out today. The 22-year-old man was jailed for 11 years and four months and the 27-year-old woman for three years and four months.
