Junior Police Call members and groups commended for their contributions (with photo)

A total of 40 Junior Police Call (JPC) members and leaders, as well as 57 JPC school clubs and district councils were commended today (May 23) for their outstanding contributions in organising and participating in community services, publicising fight crime messages and promoting the JPC Scheme.

During the Presentation Ceremony of the Hongkong Bank Foundation JPC Awards 2008, they received commendation trophies and cash awards from the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tang King-shing; the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Yam Tat-wing; and Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), Ms Teresa Au.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Superintendent of Police Public Relations Branch, Mr Ng Ka-sing, pointed out that this year marked a milestone in the 35 years' development of the JPC scheme.

He said green light had been given by the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) to grant additional credit points to JPC leaders or winners of JPC competitions for their outstanding leadership when they applied for admission to the tertiary institutions. Training programmes and activities organised by JPC would also be included in the activity list of "Other Learning Experiences" under the "334" New Academic Structure.

He thanked for the support coming from different sectors of the community, including HSBC sponsorship for the JPC Awards for 23 years, which contributed to the continued development of the JPC scheme.

Ms Teresa Au also commended JPC members for their effort and enthusiasm. She said: "The JPC mission corresponds with HSBC's aims to actively support education projects in the community and encourage students to have holistic development. HSBC is proud to have funded the award scheme since 1986. We hope to encourage the youth of Hong Kong to serve the community, develop their potential and nurture their leadership skills."

Organised by the Police with a total funding of over $5 million from the Hongkong Bank Foundation for the past 23 years, the JPC Awards Scheme comprises five categories: Best JPC Member, Best JPC Leader/Advanced Leader, Best JPC School Club (Primary School), Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and Best JPC District Council.

A selection panel made up of representatives from the Police, HSBC and non-governmental organisations picked the winners from 494 nominated JPC members and 780 nominated groups.

Mr Chan Chun-wing from Tsuen Wan was selected as the Best JPC Member and Mr Liang Chun-ho, Alex from Kowloon City the Best JPC Advanced Leader. Each received a commendation trophy and an $8,000 cash award.

The Holy Trinity College of Sham Shui Po District and the Tong Mei Road Government Primary School of Mong Kok District won the Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and the Best JPC School Club (Primary School) awards respectively. The former received $13,000 and the latter $8,000 as the cash awards. The Best JPC District Council award went to Sham Shui Po JPC District Council, which was honoured with a $21,000 cash award.
