Woman jailed for using false instrument
***************************************

A 47-year-old woman was sentenced to 40 months' imprisonment for using a false instrument at the District Court today (June 4).

The Court heard that during November 2006 and June 2007, the defendant had used false copies of invoices and evidence of shipment of goods setting out the names of purchasers of her company's goods for drawing credit facilities from two local banks. Credits amounting to about $8.1 million were given to the defendant's company as a result.

In July 2007, both banks experienced difficulties in recovering repayments from the defendant. The purchasers were contacted but they denied any knowledge of the purported transactions. A report was then made to the Police.

Officers of the Commercial Crime Bureau conducted investigations into the case and arrested the defendant on December 6, 2007. She was subsequently charged with two counts of using a false instrument.

She was convicted of the offences and sentence was handed down today.
