Taiwanese jailed for conspiracy to defraud

The District Court has sentenced a 49-year-old Taiwanese man involved in two telephone deception cases to five years and two months in jail.

The court heard that on April 15 and 16 the 49-year-old defendant Yang Cheng-lin made telephone calls to two victims, claiming that their relatives were being detained in the Mainland and required the victims to pay a sum of money for the release of their relatives.

One of the 60-year-old victims had paid $600,000 to the defendant while the other 70-year-old victim reported the case to the Police after feeling suspicious.

The Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon West took over the case for investigation and arrested the defendant in Tsim Sha Tsui on April 16.

Yang Cheng-lin, who was recruited by a cross-border telephone deception syndicate, was charged with two count of conspiracy to defraud and he was convicted today (June 18) at the District Court.
