Territory-wide campaign to promote driving safety
*************************************************
Police have concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

The campaign, codenamed "Kickstarter", started on June 8 and ended yesterday (June 21) had resulted in the issue of 100 verbal warnings, 319 summonses and 4,808 fixed penalty tickets as well as the arrests of two goods vehicle drivers for alleged drink driving. Of the total number of summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 33 per cent were issued for speeding, 13 per cent for mobile phone offences, 6 per cent for seat belt offence and 5 per cent for failing to comply with traffic signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 464 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 27,000 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles as well as members of the public. The public were encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.

This was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police since 2009 by adopting a three-prone approach of publicity, education and enforcement to target moving traffic offences.

"The campaign is intended to enhance public awareness of road safety and to reduce traffic accidents", a Police spokesman said.
