Drug trafficker jailed for sixteen years
********************************

A 44-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment after being convicted of trafficking in dangerous drugs at High Court today (July 21).

The court heard that following extensive investigations into a local drug trafficking syndicate in August last year, officers of the Narcotics Bureau (NB) mounted an operation in Fanling on September 20, 2008.

NB officers intercepted the 44-year-old man while he was leaving a unit in Luen Wo Hui and seized about 1.1 kilogram of cocaine in his possession.

A subsequent search in the unit led to further seizure of 780 grams of crack cocaine and some manufacturing and packaging equipments. Police believed the seizure could fetch some $1.9 million in the retail market.

The man was subsequently charged with two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs and sentence was handed down today.
