Counterfeit credit card syndicate member jailed
***********************************************

The District Court today (July 28) sentenced a 40-year-old man to three and a half years' jail for conspiracy to use false instruments.

The District Court heard that on December 31, 2008, Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) officers mounted an operation at the Lo Wu Boundary Control Point to neutralise a cross-boundary counterfeit credit card syndicate.

CCB officers identified and intercepted Wong Chung-yin, the defendant, when he arrived Hong Kong at the Control Point.

Three counterfeit credit cards concealed inside a pack of cigarettes were seized from the defendant's jacket.

Investigations revealed that that Wong was recruited by a cross-boundary counterfeit credit card syndicate to act as a courier for delivery of the counterfeit credit cards from Shenzhen to Hong Kong.

Wong was subsequently charged for conspiracy to use false instruments. He pleaded guilty in the District Court and the sentence was handed down today (July 28).

Police remind the public that committing counterfeit credit card related crimes was a serious offence and subject to a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment.
